San Francisco

San Francisco die-inOrganizers estimated the crowd at 30,000 in a protest highlighted by a mass die-in during which protestors laid down on Market Street, San Francisco's principal throughfare. The protest received page B1 coverage in the San Francisco Chronicle (Thousands "die" in anti-war protest on Market St. in SF).

The day started with a protest in the Civic Center, accompanied by a number of  feeder actions, most notably one staged at the nearby Federal Building by the labor contingent.  The march ended at Dolores Park, where another protest featured Cindy Sheehan and Congresswoman Barbara Lee.  At the opposite side of the park, several groups conducted Peace and Justice Convergences focusing on issues related to the Iraq War.  Great photos of the protest are available on IndyBay IMC.

The San Francisco mobilization was organized by the Oct 27th Coalition-San Francisco. For more details about the mobilization, please visit: www.oct27sf.org.

October 27 Labor Contingent, March and Peace & Justice Convergence in SF

October27SF Labor Rally & March & Convergence 211

The demonstration in San Francisco was endorsed by more than 150 organizations (www.oct27sf.org), among which were seven labor councils and numerous local unions. These photos start with a labor rally at the SF Federal Building at 10:30 a.m., followed by a march to the SF Civic Center Plaza to join a kickoff rally already in progress. From there the 30,000+ demonstrators marched 1.7 miles to Dolores Park. En route, there was a mass "die-in" - a powerful symbolic recognition of the nearly 4000 U.S.
