8,000 March and Rally for Peace
By the time 1:00 came around, the rain had pretty much dissipated, and the March began at 38th Street, with the links in the Human Chain joining at the end of the marchers as they passed by.
When the March reached city hall, it had about 3,000 participants and, as if by magic, was joined by the IVAW Yellow Rose of Texas Bus, which had traveled as part of a caravan from Arlington Cemetery, to DC, to Baltimore, and to Wilmington, before its arrival in Philadelphia. The march picked up another 2-3 thousand participants during its last leg from City Hall to Independence Mall, arriving a little behind schedule, but hail and hearty.
Our speakers and performers were terrific, and somehow managed to bring out the sun at about 3:30…with the rest of the day quite beautiful. The IVAW Bus made the rounds at the mall, to the delight of the crowd. Other features of the day included the Farkas automobile, inscribed with the names of every American casualty in Iraq.
It was a terrific day, and series of events. At an upcoming Review and Evaluation Meeting, we will discuss “where do we go from here,” among other things.
